Podcast E64 ~ SpareStream
Can you ever have too many Airstreams?
Meet John and Amy Van Artsdalen from Texas ~ known around the community as
the SpareStream duo, this fun-loving couple have two Airstreams:
a 1984 beauty and a 2001 model both ready for adventures.
And one thing is for sure . . . these two travelers
know how to roll with the punches . . .
One time at . . . Yellowstone
On this week’s episode of The Riveted with Chris and Gina, John and Amy take us
back to an unforgettable trip through Yellowstone National Park — the kind of trip where
the scenery is stunning, the wildlife is majestic . . . and sometimes a little too friendly.
Like every traveler entering Yellowstone, they slowed to admire the bison roaming freely.
It was peaceful, magical, and bucket-list worthy . . . until one very curious bison
decided to investigate their vintage ’84 Airstream up close (and personal)!
And by “up close,” we mean:
HEAD. BUTT. DIRECT HIT.
In one swift move, this 2,000-pound beast punched its horn directly through the back of their Airstream
piercing the skin and landing squarely into their mattress.
Now, most people would probably panic.
John and Amy?
They laughed, shook it off, and turned it into the kind of legendary
road story Airstreamers tell around campfires for years.
Two Airstreams, One Big Life
Their nickname, SpareStream, isn’t just cute — it fits them perfectly.
Whether they’re rolling in the vintage ’84 or cruising in the “spare,”
John and Amy live with a spirit that says:
“Why choose one adventure when you can enjoy them all?”
These two embody everything we love about the Airstream life . . . humor, resilience, and a knack for
finding happiness no matter what the road brings. From bison bumps to breathtaking views,
they’ve experienced some amazing road stories. We even discovered while chatting, we both were
in Jackson Hole, WY at the same time watching the solar eclipse in 2017!
Different campsites, same magical moment under the sky.
A moment that perfectly captures the spirit of chasing beauty, connection, and adventure.
It’s wild how often Airstream paths cross long before the friendships officially do.
Whether they’re traveling in their 1984 or rolling in the “SpareStream,” John and Amy remind us
that the Airstream lifestyle isn’t just about the miles . . . it’s about the memories.
Featured Gear from the Episode
Inspired by the SpareStream duo, here are a few road-tested essentials to
keep your travels smooth, safe, and maybe a little bison-proof:
- Heavy-Duty Wheel Chocks – Because the only thing that should move your trailer is you, not a wandering bison.
- Lynx Levelers – For extra stability on uneven terrain in parks like Yellowstone.
- RV Backup Camera System – Always helpful to know what’s behind you… just in case someone horned wants a close-up.
- Memory Foam RV Mattress Topper – For when your mattress becomes a wildlife crime scene.
- Exterior Aluminum Patch Kit – A must-have for vintage Airstream owners who know the road (Bison) has opinions.
